Economically speaking, Syria was one of the most prosperous and fertile countries in the Mediterranean region and rich in natural resources. Before the war, Syria increasingly focused on oil extraction, which became an important source of revenue.

In many parts of Syria, such as the war zones of Idlib and Aleppo, there are countless children who have never had the chance to live a peaceful life or truly get to know their homeland, as the conflict which has lasted for 11 years is older than they are.

Millions of people, including more than 500,000 traumatized children, have been forced to flee since the war began. Many now live in refugee tents or remain in their war-damaged homes. Many parents are desperate, not knowing how to protect their children. Especially in winter, when temperatures drop below freezing, children die from cold and chronic malnutrition.

Unusually heavy rainfall often leads to torrential floods in refugee camps. Due to the moisture, children frequently suffer from crusting on their hands and feet. Blankets and food supplies are often washed away or rendered unusable.
